Seriously, there are, like, seven romance shows this season. Hyperbole? Maybe.
Not gonna lie, I wasn’t all that excited going into this season. I knew we were getting another season of Kaguya-sama, but that was pretty much the only thing I really cared about. Everything else just seemed… meh. I figured this would be the season to watch nothing and put a thousand hours into Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Because God knows I’m not putting more into Persona 5 Royal. Those poor hundred hours of my life…
Getting back on topic: this season is looking to be another good one, much to my surprise! We’ve got lots of returning shows and a few promising new ones! We even have a new Trigger show! And a fucking Digimon remake?!
Is that what it is? I dunno. The Pokemon fan in me refuses to watch it. I haven’t forgotten the war…
These shows are my top picks for this season! Remember, this is all based on my personal opinion and on what I consider worth my time. There are a ton of shows this season and, despite having my schedule opened up by a certain global thing that’s been happening, I don’t have time to watch them all. If you have any recommendations that I missed, be free to let me know. Now, let’s get started.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2
IT’S BACK, BABY!! MY EXCITEMENT IS REAL!!
The first season of Kaguya-sama took me completely by surprise. I honestly didn’t expect anything going into it. Then, five minutes in, I realized I was watching something special. Mostly because I had to pause because I was laughing so hard I was in tears. So, naturally, when I heard they were making a season two, I was incredibly excited!
Was that excitement met? Well, that’s yet to be seen. As I always say, a story is only as good as its ending. However, so far, I can’t say I’m disappointed! It’s more Kaguya-sama and that is exactly what I wanted!
I’m a simple man. I enjoy watching cute anime characters doing cute (and hilarious) things. Sue me.
Tower of God
I’ve never heard of this property before. But it’s pretty neat!
The premise here isn’t all that original. Oh, climb a tower to have your wish granted and have an adventure? Wowee, never seen that before! It certainly doesn’t help that the dialogue is… not all that great. The characters are fine, but not especially interesting or likable. Maybe it’s too early to judge. But so far, I’m not especially impressed.
The main thing that draws me in is the style. This show has a very distinct look to it, with some interesting character/monster designs and gorgeous backgrounds. It looks super good in motion! This is easily one of the best looking shows of the season so far!
Still, I haven’t seen enough of it to really make up my mind yet. So far, it seems pretty interesting. I’m enjoying it so far. But I haven’t quite figured out how much I like it.
Although I’m more than willing to be won over.
Sing “Yesterday” For Me
God damn dude, this show is great! I’m always a sucker for a good drama and this is giving me everything I need!
This show does a lot to subvert the usual romantic drama tropes in anime. The main character confesses in the first episode and is immediately rejected (thus making him the most relatable character in the history of anime). Rather than a bunch of school students, our two main leads are college graduates; only one character in the cast so far is a schoolboy!
I mean, technically one of them is still school age. But she dropped out and works in a bar now, so it doesn’t count.
So far, I’m really enjoying this show! The style is nice and the animation is gorgeous. The characters are interesting and likable and the dialogue is pretty good. It seems really interesting and enjoyable!
I can’t wait for it to rip my heart out!
BNA
It’s a Trigger show. I feel like I can leave it at that and move on. So I will because I’m lazy. Moving on!
Honorable Mentions
Here are all the shows I haven’t seen, new and old. I might get around to them eventually; but for now, this is where they stand. They are:
- Food Wars season five or whatever it’s on (sorry, I’m not into foody-hentai)
- My Next Life as a Villainess (oh joy, another Isekai set in a video game world; only this time, the main character is trying to prevent their own murder!)
- Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 2 (I’ve actually heard good things about this one, but I still haven’t gotten around to it)
- Fruits Basket Season 2 (it’s more Fruits Basket; that’s always a good thing)
Conclusion
I hesitate to say that this season is a step up from the last. I mean, the last one gave us ‘Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken’ and ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit’! It’s hard to top that, no matter how good you are! The bar has been set super high for this year!
Whether this season will meet, surpass, or fall below that bar is yet to be seen. But so far, so good! There are a fair few good shows that I’m looking forward to seeing more of! This year got off to a strong start and it’s keeping up with the momentum!
What a perfect time to be trapped in your home, huh? That is, if you aren’t busy playing Final Fantasy 7 Remake. You know. Like me.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start my third playthrough.
