Friends, the Winter season of anime has come to an end. And oh boy, what a season it’s been! There were many shows, most of which were of very high quality! Sure, we had some duds here and there (cough cough WATATEN: an Angel Flew Down to Me), but all in all, it was a grand ol’ time!
But which were the best of the best? Which ones should you take the time to watch, even among the oncoming wave of new shows? Well, here are my personal picks from the bunch.
But first: our honorable mentions!
- The Quintessential Quintuplets (fun and cute, but the art and animation was incredibly up and down, and it was edged out by a far better romantic comedy)
- Boogiepop and Others (I’ve heard it’s actually really cool, but that style of storytelling just gives me a headache)
- The Promised Neverland (the first episode was amazing, but I never watched anything beyond that. I sure as hell will though. Eventually.)
- Domestic Girlfriend (hey man, watching a dumpster fire can be entertaining to!)
- My Roommate is a Cat (if you want to know my full thoughts, check out last weeks post on it right here)
- The Rising of the Shield Hero (the Isekai trash within me shall never die)
Now, with those out of the way, let’s get started with my pick for best action/adventure show: Dororo.
Adapted from a classic manga, Dororo makes all the necessary changes to make the story genuinely amazing. The characters are deep and incredibly interesting. The art and animation is downright gorgeous, and it fits the tone of the story far better than the goofy look of the original manga. The action choreography is fucking incredible, easily some of the best this season.
I mean, come on! You’ve got a fucking blind, deaf samurai taking on demons with SWORDS FOR ARMS!! HOW FUCKING METAL IS THAT?!
This show is a great time. It’s very dark at times, yes (cough cough Mio), but it’s highly enjoyable. Give it a shot if you want some bad ass action with great characters and an interesting story.
Moving on, let’s discuss my favorite romance/comedy this season. And if you were around for Valentine’s Day, you already know what I’m about to say. It’s Kaguya-sama: Love is War.
I love literally everything about this show. The characters are amazing in every possible way, from their designs to their personalities. Yu Ishigami is literally just me from high school! I’m not kidding, I’ve never related so much to an anime character in my whole fucking life!
I cannot think of a single joke that didn’t have me in fucking hysterics! Every single one is hysterical, and they work well with the characters flawlessly! It’s cute, it’s hilarious, and it’s gorgeous! This is a show that I will undoubtedly come back to for years to come when I need a laugh.
And considering that the other show holding that title was Nozaki-kun, that’s quite impressive.
TLDR: watch this show. For the love of fucking god, watch this show. Support the official release so we can get a second season. Then, we can hope to see another Chika dance.
Or maybe a dance with the actual best girl: Ai Hayasaka. Fight me. Moving on.
It’s time for the best show of the season. You’ll never guess what it is. Go on, I’ll give you a shot. Take a guess. You’ll never figure it out.
Mob Psycho 100’s second season.
I fucking reviewed every single episode of the season! Did you expect anything else to sit at the top?
I’ve said everything that needs to be said already. Or at least as much as I could without spoilers (which we’ll get into next week). The animation is incredible, reaching peaks higher than full feature films at certain points! The story is masterful, with the best characters and most emotional moments in the season! The action is downright incredible, with even the most minute fight getting the full Sakuga treatment.
This show has made me laugh, cry, and cheer in practically every episode. It’s genuinely incredible, and I firmly believe that it’s one of the best shows of all time. Not the season. Ever.
Watch this fucking show. I’ve said that at the end of every single Mob Review 100 post, but that’s because it needs to be said! If you haven’t watched Mob Psycho, then you are missing the fuck out! It’s a masterpiece through and through, one that everyone should at least give a chance.
I assure you. One chance is all the show needs. It’ll more than likely win you over with that alone.
With this, we can put the Winter season behind us. Now we can look to the future! Winter was solid, and Spring is looking to be just as great! I mean, an all new Fruits Basket premiers today! And One Punch Man season two is finally coming out!
We’re… we’re still excited about that, right? That still looks good! R-right?
