Writer’s Diary: February 2023 Update

Wait, where did January go? It’s over already? All I did was blink!

Progress was regrettably slow for me last month. More than a few real-world issues kept me from putting in as much work as I’d like to into personal projects. You might have noticed a partial side effect of it in the sudden schedule change of My Review Academia (which will remain as it is). Luckily, that should be the only effect this slump has on the blog.

For movies this month, we’re finally going to wrap up the Illumination marathon. All that remains now are the two Sing movies. After that, I’ll take one week off the movie slot. Come March, I’ll find a new film to watch. Maybe I’ll finally get around to the new Puss in Boots movie.

God, won’t that be a breath of fresh air…

Best of the Bestiary continues as we reach the end of the R section and the beginning of the S. Expect articles on the Roper, the Rust Monster, and the Sahuagin. Of those three, the lattermost will definitely be the most dense article to read. Brace yourselves for that.

I’ve got a few books and short stories ready to review this month. Starting with ‘Travel by Bullet’, the third book in the Dispatcher series by John Scalzi. Currently, I’m making my way through ‘Anansi Boys’ by Neil Gaiman. If I’m not done with that in time to follow-up that first review, expect either another Poirot short or another bit of H.P. Lovecraft.

Honestly, I’m not sure what I’m going to do next with the character analysis slot. The day after this article goes up, we’ll conclude our Simpsons analysis series with Maggie. After that, I’m not sure what I’ll do. Sorry to say that I don’t have a solid plan for that. Not this month.

For video games, we’ll be taking an extensive break from Final Fantasy. Starting with a game I’m quickly becoming addicted to: Vampire Survivor. If I can break myself away from that, I’ll start playing through Disco Elysium. Or maybe I’ll pick up Hi-Fi Rush; that game looks sick and I really want to talk about it.

Finally, we have the anime/manga slot. Since we’re still fairly early on in the Winter season, there won’t be any full series reviews for a little while. Expect plenty of Berserk reviews. Though I also intend to get around to a certain romcom manga sometime in the near future.

Wanna know what it is? Here’s a hint: you probably saw people laughing about a certain chapter of it online.

That’s just about everything for the blog. Sorry to be vague with a few of these slots, but that’s just how it is. The schedule and the ideas I have to fill it are not set in stone. I just hope I can deliver some worthwhile stuff for you guys.

To wrap things up, let’s have a quick look at the novel. Progress in January was slower than it’s ever been. I’m determined to fix that come February. In the meantime, let’s look at the current numbers!

  • Total words: 111,684
  • Page count: 216
  • Chapters completed: 35 + prologue
  • Parts completed: 3/5

There’s still a healthy chunk left to write before the end. At this point in time, I’m aiming to end part four somewhere around chapter 45-50. After that, part five will be significantly shorter; that one should end around chapter 58-60. Then the story will wrap up with a fairly short epilogue.

None of these numbers are set in stone. I know how the story is going to end, but the details of how it’s going to get there are being made up as I go along. So… take that whole prior paragraph with a grain of salt.

I’m feeling pretty good about this project. The last few chapters have been slow-goings, but they were still really fun to write! I’m really excited to eventually share this with you guys.

Key word being eventually…
