Spring is here once again. The snow is melting. The flowers are blooming on the trees. Allergies are flaring. The school year is approaching its end.
It’s the perfect time to stay inside and watch anime.
There are some heavy hitters this season. Kaguya-sama is back for season three, therefor I am allowed to be happy again. Komi-san is back for another season (only half a year from season one; god damn, that was fast), promising more adorable antics. Rising of the Shield Hero is back, and we’ve even got a new season of Overlord!
Wait, what? *Checks notes* ‘Skeleton Knight in Another World’… Be a little more subtle about your copying, would you?
Spy X Family
Of the new shows this season, it’s pretty safe to say that this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest. Granted, my view on that is limited; I just know that I’ve seen dozens of panels from the manga in meme formats.
I can see why. This show is delightfully fun so far! The premise is so simple, yet brilliant. The world’s best spy suddenly being forced to become a family man for his mission is a brilliant foundation for an action-comedy! So far, the execution of that idea has been remarkable. It’s the perfect blend of action, character drama, and comedy.
Definitely going to keep an eye on this one. I get the distinct feeling that this one ain’t going anywhere but up from here.
Also, Anya is too adorable for words. She deserves the world and more.
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie (Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san)
I doubt anything will fill the hole My Dress-Up Darling has left in my heart. But that doesn’t mean I’ll give up on trying to find something that will!
This one isn’t particularly complex. It’s a rom-com, but the girl is cool and the dude is cute and clumsy. But what it lacks in complexity, it more than makes up for with solid comedic timing, a bright and colorful aesthetic, and decent character designs.
It even has the new most powerful anime character of all time. Shikimori actually managed to save someone from Truck-kun! A feat we all thought impossible! Truly, she is too strong.
Whether this show deserves sticking with is yet to be seen. But it seems good enough for a few episodes of cute fun. That’s good enough for me.
Also, the OP is pretty fuckin’ great.
Love After World Domination (Koi wa Sekai Sefuku no Ato de)
This show is super fun! Ha ha, get it? Super? Cause it’s a parody of super sentai shows?
Laugh, dammit, I’m funny!
The premise for this one is honestly genius with how funny it is. A sentai show where one of the heroes starts going out with one of the villains? How has that not been a thing before?
And we have yet another contender for best girl of the season. I never thought I’d describe a sentai villain as ‘absolutely adorable’, but here we are.
This one is enjoyable. Whether its charm will last all season is still yet to be seen. But so far, it works.
I’m Quitting Heroing (Yuusha, Yamemasu)
And our pick for dumb fun this season goes to…
In all seriousness, this could make for a fun show. The overpowered hero changes sides during a time of peace and now has to help the army that he himself destroyed? That sounds like a high-quality Konosuba gag!
If done well. That’s the great caveat. It could very well turn into yet another wish-fulfillment fantasy harem anime. Only time will tell.
This one most likely won’t be stealing the show anytime soon. Still, everyone needs a bit of dumb fun every now and then. Like anime junk food.
Overall, this is a fairly strong season. Some heavy hitters are back and they’re striking just as hard as ever, and the newcomers are swinging hard too. We’re in for a solid couple of weeks.
And if nothing else, it will be a very wholesome season.
