We’re in the home stretch now, everyone. Let’s see if these monsters can stick the landing.
Arcanaloth
An arcanaloth is surprisingly durable for a bookworm. Its AC is just shy of 20 and its HP just breaks the triple digits. On top of that, it’s resistant to cold, fire, lightning, and all nonmagical melee. Plus, it’s completely immune to acid and poison damage, as well as the charm and poison conditions. And the cherry on top: Magic Resistance.
Next, we’ve gotta talk about its spell list. That list being:
- At will: alter self, darkness, heat metal, invisibility (self only), magic missile
- Cantrips: fire bolt, mage hand, minor illusion, prestidigitation
- 1st level (4 slots): detect magic, identify, shield, Tenser’s floating disk
- 2nd level (3 slots): detect thoughts, mirror image, phantasmal force, suggestion
- 3rd level (3 slots): counterspell, fear, fireball
- 4th level (3 slots): banishment, dimension door
- 5th level (2 slots): contact other plane, hold monster
- 6th level (1 slot): chain lightning
- 7th level (1 slot): finger of death
- 8th level (1 slot): mind blank
God damn, that is… that’s a helluva list. Don’t fuck with the quiet kid in class.
In terms of melee, it only has claws. They don’t do much damage, but they do have a small chunk of extra poison damage to make up for it. Plus, with Magic Weapons, they bypass resistances to melee damage. As a last resort, it’s not too bad.
Oh, and it can also teleport. Because why not? This guy wasn’t terrifying enough as is, apparently.
Mezzoloth
A mezzoloth is not nearly as durable as its predecessor. Its AC is higher, sure, but its HP is quite a bit lower. Not to mention it has the exact list of resistances and immunities.
Save for charm. Just in case your party’s bard gets… ideas.
It, too, has some spells. But not nearly as many as the arcanaloth, and not nearly as dangerous. They are:
- 2/day each: darkness, dispel magic
- 1/day: cloudkill
Its primary focus isn’t on spellcasting, but on melee. On top of its claws (no poison damage this time), it has a trident. Unfortunately, neither are particularly frightening or dangerous. This is a low-level grunt through and through.
But it can still teleport. So that’s something.
Nycaloth
In terms of durability, the Nycaloth is about on par with its two predecessors. It has an AC of 18 and the highest HP pool so far. Plus, it has all the same resistances as the mezzoloth. Which means it is, in fact, possible to seduce the fat demon warrior.
It also has spells. They are:
- At will: darkness, detect magic, dispel magic, invisibility (self only), mirror image
The rest comes down to its melee. Its claws deal a decent bit of damage, but that’s about it. Far more dangerous are its claws; should they hit and the victim fails a DC save, they’ll be cursed with a fiendish wound. They take an extra bit of damage at the start of each of their turns, and each time the nycaloth hits the wounded target, the damage increases. Only a medicine check or healing magic can dispel the wound.
And before you ask: yes. It can still teleport.
Ultroloth
Finally, we have the ultroloth. This is the most durable of the lot by far. Its AC is just shy of 20 by one digit and its HP is well into the hundreds. It also has all the same resistances and immunities, including charm and frightened. No seducing this alien demon thing.
As for its spells, its got:
- At will: alter self, clairvoyance, darkness, detect magic, detect thoughts, dispel magic, invisibility (self only), suggestion
- 3/day each: dimension door, fear, wall of fire
- 1/day each: fire storm, mass suggestion
It’s also got a sword. It isn’t especially impressive or intimidating.
Significantly more impressive is Hypnotic Gaze. Basically: you meet its eyes and fail a Wisdom save, and you’ll be charmed and stunned until the end of the ultroloth’s next turn. Should they make the save, they’ll be immune to the effect. Fail, and they’ll be utterly vulnerable.
And surprise! It can teleport too!
Conclusion & Placement
I’m honestly blown away by how crazy these guys are. Save the mezzoloth, all of them can make for incredibly interesting and tense battles! Hell, even the mezzoloth isn’t that bad; it’s only held back by being the lowest level member of the family!
At the end of this three-part epic, I’m glad to say that these monsters are fantastic! Excellent lore! Varied and creative designs! Stats that make for awesome fights! As the penultimate entry, they’re amazing!
With all that in mind, the Yugoloths are all going to #17 on the Best of the Bestiary!
See y’all next week for the grand finale!
