Fall Anime 2023: Old Leaves, New Shows

Here we are again, folks. With the turn of the season, we’ve got a whole slew of new anime to watch. Time to dig through it all to find the gems!

First, there are the sequels. A lot of sequels. Such as:

  • Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3
  • Spy X Family Season 2
  • Goblin Slayer Season 2
  • The Eminence in Shadow Season 2
  • Dr. Stone: New World Part 2
  • Tokyou Revengers Season 3
  • Girlfriend, Girlfriend Season 2
  • The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2

And there are probably more. Holy shit, dude, there’s so many shows this season! We haven’t even touched on the original stuff yet!

Speaking of which…

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Oh wow, this one was a lot more than I was expecting.

The premise is simple. After defeating the Demon King and saving the world, the heroic party all go their separate ways. Generations later, and now one of those party members, the elf Frieren, is faced with the grim reality that she will outlive all her old friends. Now she has to raise a new generation of heroes and fulfill the dying wishes of those she once held dearest.

I love this idea! It’s such a solid foundation to explore existentialism in a fantasy story. How the hell have I never heard of this series before now?!

Don’t sleep on this one. It’s a brilliant, beautiful story so far and I cannot wait to see where it goes. This is my top pick for the season, hands down.

Undead Unluck

Beautiful exestentialism is over. Time for insanity!

This show is nuts. Our main character is cursed to bring misfortune to everyone she touches. Surprise! She meets the one guy in the world with powers that work with that ability. Insanity ensues. For god’s sake, just look at that poster!

All because she finished her favorite manga and went to kill herself. Honestly, I can kinda get it.

This is a fun pick. If you’re looking for something totally nuts, this is a pretty strong show.

The Kingdoms of Ruin

And the award for ‘Season’s Edgiest’ goes to…

This show gets off to an intense and dark start. Sexual assault and public humiliation? Check. Gruesome imagery? Check. An edgy, vengeful protagonist with empty, hateful eyes? Big ol’ check on that one! Am I watching a fantasy anime or the kind of hentai that makes you want to take a shower after watching it?

Now, I don’t want to write this show off as edgy nonsense. There’s a pretty cool premise to this setting and the story. A world where technology overtakes magic and creates a faction war between the two? That sounds awesome!

Maybe this show will turn out to be awesome. It might turn it around later and make some powerful points about xenophobia and revenge. Or it might double-down on being try-hard and edgy and become delicious trash. Who can say? Either way, I’m intrigued.

Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yonkishi

You mean to tell me this series is still around?!

I kinda enjoyed the first two seasons of Seven Deadly Sins. Though I doubt I would still like it if I went back to it. Besides that, I’ve heard the last seasons of the show were an absolute disaster. Don’t expect me to catch up with the original series.

So why, then, is the sequel here? Call it morbid curiosity. Where could this new series possibly go after the catastrophe of the original? It’s like if an ambulance crashed into another ambulance, then another ambulance pulls up to add even more chaos into the mix! How could I resist?

Now, that being said: there is a chance this show could genuinely be good. A slim chance, maybe, but there is a chance. I’m going into this one with an open mind, if with some pretty low expectations.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-

Some premises are so absurdly ridiculous that you just have to give them a shot.

Let me break down the plot synopsis. Our protagonist is eating a raw pig liver, passes out, and comes to in the body of a pig. Then he meets a cute girl who can read minds, who accepts him despite his boorish attitude. Just one problem: she still plans on eating him.

What? I’m sorry, WHAT?!

This is an absolutely insane idea for a story. It sounds like something a writer might come up with on a wild acid trip! Yet here it is. Real and fully animated. I’m not sure which god from which pantheon I ought to thank, but I know it’s one of ’em!

Conclusion

It’s insane to me just how fast the anime train has gotten. Every single season comes packaged with dozens of shows, and so many of them are incredible! There’s plenty of trash too, of course, but trashy anime is fun anime!

But what about you guys? What’re you watching this season? Did I miss anything good? I’m sure I did, there’s a ton going on. Hit me with your recommendations!

Happy Autumn, everyone!
