I’ll be honest with you guys. My heart was not ready for this episode. I was expecting an emotional gut punch, but this was a bit more than I could handle.
In this episode, Reigen must perform an exorcism on live television without any assistance whatsoever. But when things go wrong, he begins to spiral downwards into despair. But he has hope that he can pull things together with a press conference at the end, during which he has a revelation that snaps him back to reality.
In terms of visuals, this episode is far from the most impressive. That honor still goes to episode five. This one does have some creative visuals, great shot composition and excellent use of music, so it’s certainly not a slouch in the presentation department. However, it’s clear that the story was the far greater focus of this episode.
Unfortunately, I can’t really talk about that without spoiling the whole damn episode. So you’ll just have to take my word for it when I say that it’s some high quality shit.
This episode marks a major turning point for Reigen’s character, as well as his relationship with Mob. The last episode focused on his inflating ego, and this is the one where we see where that goes. Watching him struggle through his problems, the number of which are only increasing further by the minute, is honestly really hard.
They even bring back several characters from throughout the series. From both season one and two, we are re-introduced to many of the people that Reigen has interacted with up to this point. We even get to revisit one of the most powerful scenes from the first season.
But again: I can’t say what it is. Just take my word for it when I say that it’s an emotional kick to the dick in all the best ways.
Story wise, this is easily one of the strongest episodes in the series. While the animation doesn’t compare to some of the more grand moments from before this point, the significance developments to the plot more than make up for it. And from the looks of the preview, this streak is only going to keep going.
Friendly reminder: if you’re not watching Mob Psycho 100, you are missing the fuck out!
