Earlier, Nintendo announced a forty minute long Direct entirely dedicated for Smash Bros Ultimate. And of course, the mere announcement has set the internet ablaze. People are screaming for Geno, Shadow, Banjo & Kazooie, and even Waluigi (even though hope for that should be well dead by now), and of course the meme picks, such as Undertale’s infamous Sans.
And the Grinch. Apparently.
God I love the internet.
So naturally, I figured I’d throw my hat into the ring. And much like the last Direct I covered, I’m more than ready to see Nintendo eviscerate my predictions. Y’know. As they are ought to do.
Let’s start with the obvious one. The last time Nintendo released a Smash Bros dedicated Direct, they ended by showing off what the main menu looked like. And if you’ll recall, there was a special tab that was blurred out. They simply stated that they couldn’t talk about that yet.
Now, I feel it seems obvious that they’re going to announce what it is. The question is: what is it? It can’t be the single players stuff, as they’ve already announced that, and it is assumed that it’ll be placed in the ‘Games and More’ tab. Rumors are flying of something called ‘Spirits’, which is theorized to be a new story mode, much like the ‘Subspace Emissary’ mode from Brawl.
Honestly, it’s hard for me to argue this. It seems like a strong chance, as people have been clamoring for another attempt at the story mode, as the one from Brawl was quite… disliked. If they’re truly going for the ‘Ultimate Smash Bros’ experience, bringing back and improving the story mode from a previous game would be an excellent addition. But I have my doubts. When it comes to their mistakes, Nintendo usually prefers to try avoiding them rather than trying again.
But that’s hardly the most discussed thing. When it comes to a Smash Bros discussion, there’s only one thing that people really want to see: characters. And with the next character being the coveted number of sixty-nine, the memes are flying even farther and faster than ever before.
So the question is: who will we be getting?
I’m going to limit myself to two characters, as that would lift the number of characters to seventy, and Sakurai has gone on record saying that there wouldn’t be too many new characters.
Which feels like a lie, because we got: Ridley, Inklings, Isabelle, King K. Rool and the fucking Belmonts. That’s still a lot if you ask me. And that’s without mentioning the new ‘Echo’ fighters.
Anyways… who are my guesses, both of which are very likely to be wrong?
My first is a bit of an odd choice, but I like standing out. I’m going to say that the first new character to be announced is Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7.
Now, here me out on this. Final Fantasy 7 is being ported to Switch, which will be the game’s first ever release on a Nintendo platform. And considering that Cloud is already in the game, it wouldn’t be too far fetched to see him get a spot. Plus, he isn’t exactly lacking on moves. From his insane swordsmanship skills, huge repertoire of magic (can you imagine how fucking awesome the ‘Supernova’ would be as a Final Smash?!) and multiple forms, Sephiroth isn’t lacking on abilities.
Still, while I do think he has a solid chance, I’m not hedging all my bets on him. The port isn’t out on Switch yet, and simply having Cloud alone is a crazy enough. As much as I’d love to see him, my hopes are lower than most fossils.
The same can be said about my next pick: Xenoblade Chronicles 1’s muscle headed sidekick: Reyn.
I love this character, and I’d love to be able to play him. There’s a stronger chance for a character for Chronicles 2 (which I still need to play), but I feel like this guy would be more exciting. He has an incredibly unique weapon and skill set, so it wouldn’t be hard to give him a move set. The only real challenge I can think of is his Final Smash, but a little creativity could fix that.
Do I actually have hope for these two being in there? Not really. I only put them down because I didn’t want to talk about the popular picks, since everyone in the fucking world has already made those cases. Plus, I thought talking about a few ‘left field’ picks would be fun and interesting.
I have no doubt that there’ll be a shortage of things to talk about on the day of the Direct. Again: they announced forty minutes of announcements. Which means that they have tons left to reveal. Which begs the question:
HOW FUCKING LONG HAVE THEY BEEN MAKING THIS GAME?! IT’S FUCKING HUGE!!
