Day 214: Fall Anime 2018

With a new season comes a whole new collection of shows to watch. And this season has some… interesting ones. Mostly fantasy shows.

Like… a lot of fantasy shows.

Today, I’m going to go over a few of them that have caught my interest and a few that I hate myself for having watched. Yes, I’ve watched the first episode to each of these. And no, Not all of them are good.

Let’s get started, shall we?

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never been a huge JoJo’s fan, but I’ve got to admit that this first episode is pretty good. The animation style is unique, which fits for JoJo’s, and it is suitably bizarre and entertaining. I would say I’m looking forward to watch more…

But I still need to finish watching Part 3, so I don’t think I’ll be doing that for a while.

To be honest, I was kind of disappointed by this one. All the promotion material hyped this one up, and the animation was really great. But in terms of story and characters, it felt very generic to me. Still, I enjoyed the first episode enough to want to watch more. Maybe I’ll come back later to review the season.

If this one doesn’t get dragged down into the fantasy pit that this season opened.

Goblin Slayer

Really? Really guys? We’re going to get offended over this? This is all it takes to be controversial? There is literally a show entirely about incest this season, and this is the one we want to scream about?!

Screaming aside, I wasn’t a huge fan of this one. The art style is generic, although the animation is pretty solid. I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the characters, but I’ll admit: the titular Goblin Slayer is kind of fun.

If not just because he’s basically Doom Guy for goblins.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Terribly long title aside, this show is very generic Isekai. There wasn’t a whole lot here to get me interested, as most of it is spent explaining the different abilities and saying ‘Yep, I’m a slime now’. But credit where it’s due: the ‘Wipe my hard drive’ jokes were pretty funny, and Tsundere Dragon is my favorite character of the season.

Tsundere Dragon. Never before have I needed something so badly and never known until I’ve received it.

Still, this one at least has the promise of being a fun action romp, if that opening is anything to go off of. I plan on keeping this one up, but I don’t expect another Overlord.

Nothing can be another Overlord except for another season of Overlord.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

…Why? Just… why? You guys know that there’s actual porn on the internet, right? There are entire sites dedicated to hentai just like this. Why the hell does this exist? I don’t even have anything to say about it, I’m just fucking confused and uncomfortably aroused.

Oh god I’ve said too much. Forget I said that and let’s move on.

Sword Art Online Season 3

Also side note: that animation looks like ass. It actually looks terrible.

Fairy Tail Final Season

Yep. It’s Fairy Tail. It’s not very great, but I’m too deep into this series to let it go now. At this point, I just want to see how it ends.

I have a mild case of Stockholm syndrome, help me.

The animation is meh, the pacing is meh, and the writing is meh. The best thing I have to say is that the music is fucking phenomenal, as always. Say what you will about Fairy Tail, but it has some killer music.

Ace Attorney Season 2

Finally, A-1 can stop bullying Persona 5 and start bullying another one of my favorite games: Ace Attorney.

It’s not a terrible anime. The art is fine, the animation is… bad… and the pacing is rushed. It’s an A-1 video game adaptation. What do you expect? It’s perfectly meh, and it’s fine to enjoy it or hate it.

Take a guess where I stand.

My Sister, My Writer

Two things that should never be combined have been combined yet again. Small children that are drawn as such and incest. The ultimate power combo of the Japanese Devil.

Devils? I’m actually not sure how that works, I’ll have to look into that.

This show sucks. It’s uncomfortable, bad looking, and it’s horribly unfunny and not entertaining. Skip this one, for the love of fucking god. Don’t give this one even a second of your time.

And that’s all of the ones I have the patience to watch. There’s plenty of good here, which is a hefty step up from the 2018 Summer season. But the stinkers this time stink really bad. Still, most of the new shows display quite a bit of promise, and I’m looking forward to seeing more.

Mostly more of Tsundere Dragon.
