Holy shit, writing about something that isn’t Godzilla feels weird!
That aside, it’s EVO weekend! Yay!
For those of you who don’t know, EVO is one of, if not the, biggest fighting game tournament out there. Here, the biggest fighting games are played by the best of the best in a bid to see who is the best at that particular game. It’s basically the video game real life equivalent of the World Martial Arts Tournament from Dragon Ball.
So if you want to feel inadequate about your fighting game skills, take a seat next to me on the couch and watch these two guys spend a minute and a half in the sky in Street Fighter V.
Honestly, I do enjoy EVO a lot. While it does make me feel kind of hopeless in terms of my fighting game skills, it’s even more fun to watch two professionals duke it out in a game you love.
Holy shit… Is this what people who enjoy sports think? I think I’m starting to get it!
This year was probably my favorite yet. Watching pro Dragon Ball Fighterz was super fun (and mildly scary) and the Blazblue Cross-Tag Battle games were… terrifying, holy shit they were done in like thirty seconds how are people this good at this game?! It was also good to see both Smash Bros for Wii U and Smash Melee show up (what can I say, I love me some Smash).
But you know what was really funny and mildly sad?
No Marvel VS Capcom.
Again, for those who don’t know, Marvel VS Capcom is an EVO staple. If I recall correctly (because I’m too lazy to look it up) MVC has been around since the first ever EVO, and MVC 3 has shown up at pretty much every single tournament since it’s release. Unfortunately, MVC Infinite was just… not good enough to make it.
Honestly, I support that decision. If you enjoy that game, good for you, but I simply couldn’t find any enjoyment with it. Either way, it is sad that MVC got the boot; I would’ve loved to see MVC 3 one last time.
But I’m not mad that Fighterz took it’s spot. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: I fucking love that game.
I look forward to seeing the rest of the tournament later today, as I did fall behind after the final of Fighterz. You can be sure that I’ll have each of the other games going on in the background as I do more writing today.
I’ll also need to watch a few matches of random grandmas playing these games to make myself feel better. That exists, right? That probably exists.
