Allow me to recreate what I believe went down in the production meeting of this movie.
“Okay guys, Godzilla VS King Ghidorah was a pretty big success!” said the producer. “Clearly people want to see the previous monsters making a return! The next logical step is Mothra! How do we do something new with her that’ll get people excited to see this movie?”
“Give her a new design?” suggested the costume designer.
“How about a straight remake of the original, but with the better special effects of the current day?” offered the special effects artist.
“EY YO HOW ABOUT AN EDGY ANTI-HERO MOTHRA THAT ACTUALLY KINDA LOOKS LIKE A MOTH!” screamed Terry the sandwich guy.
The entire room stops and turns to Terry. “Oh my god…” gasped the producer. “TERRY YOU’RE PROMOTED!”
Thus Battra was born.
All joking aside, I really like what they did with Battra. His design is pretty cool, and having a tag-team partner for Mothra that isn’t just another Mothra was pretty rad. Plus, an evil Mothra-like creature driven mad by the hubris and actions of humanity make him a pretty cool mirror of the titular giant moth.
He is cool. Not as cool as the reveal that Legendary did in that new trailer…
But he’s pretty cool nonetheless.
Aside from Battra, everything else in this movie is pretty standard fare. Godzilla attacks the city, Mothra rushes in to save the humans, and Battra fucks up both the humans and Godzilla. The special effects are par for the course of the Heisei era (which is to say pretty good) and the acting in both the Japanese and English versions are both…
It’s a Godzilla movie, what do you expect?
It’s a fun movie with a unique and interesting new monster for the series. Kind of like the one after the next one.
I’m so excited!
