The most unique thing this movie does is set up for Final Wars.
This movie is, as alluded to in the previous post, very similar to it’s predecessor (though given that it’s a direct sequel, it’s hard to avoid that). Really the only major differences are the presence of Mothra, Kiryu doesn’t go berserk, and the ending.
I wish I had more to say about this movie, but I just… don’t. The plot is simple and predictable, the special effects are as good as every other Godzilla movie prior, the music is excellent as always, and the action is fun to watch.
My issue is that it simply does nothing to set itself apart from the crowd. The Kiryu in this movie is the same Kiryu as in the last movie, Godzilla hasn’t grown any stronger or more dangerous than in the last film, and Mothra is the same Mothra as we’ve always seen, both in design and character.
None of these are bad things, don’t get me wrong, but I wish this movie (and the rest of the Millennium era) did more with the franchise.
Luckily, the next film in the franchise will.
I’m so excited!
