ARCHIVE Day 17: Video Game Movies

Just a friendly reminder that all of these existed. I’m so sorry.

Today’s post will be pretty short due to my work schedule. So let’s keep the topic short as well: Tomb Raider.

So, the new Tomb Raider movie premiers tomorrow, and with it comes a whole new wave of disappointed movie goers thinking ‘Maybe this time they’ll get it’. Spoiler alert guys, they probably won’t. Video Game movies have never been good before, and I don’t think Tomb Raider will break the curse. I mean, they’ve tried before.

Now, I hear the argument ‘But Jernah, some of the shots look taken straight out of the game! It’ll be a great movie because of that and nothing else!’ First of all, thanks for admitting to being oddly specific about what’ll make it good. And second, accuracy does not mean good.

Adaptations can be too close to the source material. At that point, they feel like crappy fan films. That’s what I’m afraid of for this movie. I’m afraid they’ll be too focused on shot accuracy to focus on good writing and acting.

Who knows? Maybe my fears are unfounded. But I’m not going to take the bait. I’ve already been bit by game movies too many times.

Looking at you, Doom. Everyone else may have forgotten you, but I haven’t.

Thanks for reading, and have a lovely day.
